Abstract Description : You'll learn how to teach reading to kids who are very young or very distractible. We'll start with a moment-by-moment explanation of what's happening to such kids during group reading. Basically, many students are looking at "dog" when readers or leaders say "cat," so they learn nothing. Then we'll cover the drawbacks of the system (like laborious exercise selection), before covering the astounding results of a comparison with Orton Gillingham. For example, kids in the intervention group learned 6-7 times faster per contact hour than the O.G. controls did. Another drawback is that pronunciations must be supervised by the teacher. An advantage is that tutoring can be done over Zoom. Leading groups over Zoom has not been tested.
If someone was doing a search for your session in the program what 5 words might they use to search for and find your session.: Phonics, reading, attention, decoding, zoom
Learning Objectives:
Ultimately, you will have an idea of how compatible this approach is with your existing systems, faciliities, students, and personnel. You'll be familiar with some of the evidence for its efficacy and how to measure the impact of your particular implementation.
You'll be able to picture ways of testing the system (in after-school programs, for example) and gradually expanding its usage as trustworthy data comes in. You will understand how to run a simple, inexpenisve comparison study that also uncovers weaknesses in your current curriculum.
