If you selected Cutting-Edge, what innovative ideas, approaches, or methodologies will your session introduce or explore?: The KASI Learning System is an inclusive assistive technology that employs computer vision algorithms combined with hand-held physical manipulatives to support blind and low vision students in learning chemistry content. A machine learning engine in KASI generates audio feedback and prompts to personalize the experience as learners progress.
Abstract Description : For schools to adopt digital educational tools responsibly, they need to be usable by all students, including BLV students. This is especially true for science courses where diagrams are essential for knowledge extension through problem solving. Researchers at SRI Education partnered with Alchemie Solutions, Inc. to develop and evaluate KASI, an online system that combines digital interactives with physical manipulatives and computer vision algorithms to produce a multisensory method for BLV students to learn chemistry content. Using a single case design, SRI conducted an experimental evaluation of KASI to examine whether using KASI as a component of teachers’ chemistry instruction improved BLV students’ self-efficacy and engagement.
If someone was doing a search for your session in the program what 5 words might they use to search for and find your session.: Chemistry, accessibility, blind, computer vision, multisensory
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to describe the barriers BLV students experience when learning chemistry and how innovative technologies such as the KASI system can be leveraged to address these barriers and make chemistry content more accessible to all students.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to describe the benefits and challenges of using a single case design approach to study the impact of educational programs on students who are blind or have low vision.
