Low-incidence / High Impact: Stories from Blind/Low-Vision Learners and Educators

Abstract Description :

Meeting the needs of students who are blind or have low vision (BLV) within their general population STEM classrooms can be challenging. Our company has been working in developing novel learning systems which can be used by all students by leveraging new technologies, such as computer vision and machine learning. This presentation is not about that technology, but about the inspirational stories of some of the BLV students, their teachers, the parents, and BLV STEM professionals who have inspired our research and development over the last 5 years. We build “born accessible” technology so that all students can succeed in STEM courses and to honor the individuals who have guided this development.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe some of the unique perspectives of stakeholders in the low incidence population of BLV education.
  • Regard accessible learning differently, by putting faces and stories to the need for inclusive and usable learning systems.
