Abstract

Description: Increasingly students are completing online courses while in in-person classrooms. This model attempts to blend the support and structure of the in-person environment with the personalization and flexible pacing of online learning. More research is needed to better understand how students engage in these environments and the types of support they receive from facilitators and peers. In this session, we will share recommendations based on what we learned from observing online credit recovery classrooms during a large public school district’s summer school program. Participants will also receive our observation protocol and discuss how on-site facilitators have/could help to improve learner engagement in their context.

  • Evaluate types of support by facilitators and peers on learner engagement.
  • Understand new strategies for measuring and supporting online students who are learning in a classroom environments.
